Sarah Pavlik
I am a fiber and mixed media artist inspired by the process of making. I work improvisationally, that is, I create ART out of discovery. Out of the work comes the final piece, not knowing what will happen is the excitement of the process. Sometimes this journey is exciting and anticipatory…not knowing what will happen with constant questioning, “What if?” guided by insatiable curiosity. Other times the process is fraught with anguish. Work can come together quickly, but more often than not it can take weeks or months before a piece is complete. Working on many pieces at a time allows me to let them stew while they inform me of what they need.
Some of my pieces are quilts that have been painted with dye or created with mixed media applications. Other work is pieced fabrics sewn together to create a unique composition of shape, color, line, and texture. When piecing work I will begin with a vague idea of the desired size of the finished piece and I will pick a group of colors or surface designed fabrics, placing shapes on my design wall and reacting to them as I build a composition. I may start with a motif or configuration of shapes to build upon and the piece will evolve through the work.
My goal as an artist is to create a composition that evokes movement, tension, and a desire to continue to look at the work, both close and from a distance.
