Pamela Loewen

I am a quilt artist based in Williamston, Michigan, originally from Lancaster, Pennsylvania. I began making quilts in 1989 and later deepened my practice through study with Nancy Crow, whose approach to quilt making as a contemporary art form profoundly shaped my direction. Working primarily with hand-dyed fabrics that I create myself, I build a nuanced palette that allows for subtle shifts of hue and value.

My work grows from a fascination with nature and gardens—places where order and wildness meet, and where patterns repeat, unfold, and transform. I work intuitively on the design wall, piecing together shapes that echo natural structures: petals radiating outward, leaves branching and multiplying like living fractals. Through color, scale, and repetition, these elements evolve into rhythmic, layered compositions.

In 2025 I opened Loewen Studio & Gallery in Williamston, Michigan, a space dedicated to promoting quilt making as a contemporary art form.
