Julie Sevilla Drake
There is only one question: how to love this world.
Julie Sevilla Drake has lived a lucky, rambunctious life filled with love, friendship, and adventure, thus she considers the mess, mayhem, mischief and mystery of this world to be the primal forces of her art.
Over the past years Julie has spent weeks upon weeks in wild places, hiking and backpacking and just generally travelling—from her house in the forest, to the mountains, then off to faraway lands.
When she arrived home the day after the 2024 election, she felt disgusted, disheartened, anxious, and powerless. Seeking solace, Julie went into her studio and declared, “If there’s going to be a shitshow, I’m going to make a Joy Show!” She put away her foggy colors and dyed up some saturated and beautifully bold fabrics. Art can be another way to protest. Joy as the ultimate F--- you, clowns!
Through her art, Julie Sevilla Drake offers you a glimpse of how she continues to love this world: through color and shape and texture…and joy.
