Jennifer Fons

Love of color along with shape and line drew me to art. Love of fabric and dyeing drew me to quilt-making. I am a contemporary quilt-maker and collagist. Throughout my 25 year journey to my original series, I learned to use my rotary cutter like a paintbrush to cut lines and shapes to create a composition. Using collage as a method of generating ideas for quilts I paint paper to create create collages, then dye fabric to scale up to quilts. My journey as an artist is very personal and originates in my childhood.

My series, Hiraeth, is the beginning of my voice. Hiraeth is a Welsh word with no direct English translation. It is described as homesickness. It is something I feel in my bones and which resonates with my ancestry. My work contains figures sometimes appearing isolated but also relating to one another, often appearing longing for home.
